A Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia Support Group meeting was held on February 3, 2007 in San Francisco, California. Penni Wisner and Cynthia Nicholson, the IWMF Support Group chapter leaders of the northern California areas, orchestrated this event.
The event was held at the Renaissance Parc 55 Hotel with joint collaboration of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A wonderful turnout of 100 + patients, friends, family and local medical experts came to listen and learn on the updates of research. Dr Treon was the guest speaker who spent an hour educating and updating the group on Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia- from current treatments to genetic analysis. Following, there was an hour question & answer period with him.
During the event, the Bing Center for Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia organized a familial Studies lab. DNA was taken via cheek cells and we had an overall turnout of 117 volunteers; 30 WM’rs, 32 healthy donors and 53 lymphoma patients. The 53-lymphoma patients volunteered their time and assistance for this project due to their strong concerns about lymphoma and B-Cell malignancies research.
